Videos that are too long
We don’t have all day and she is right try to write down what you are going to say before you do it and don’t be afraid to whip out the editor!
Twitter Spam
We are in the process of getting rid of a few of these and optimizing. Thanks to Brandice, we now have solid backing to get rid of them!
Trickster Alerts
Sharing videos then making them public. I am guilty of this because I have people on my buddy list that only are subscribed to “Shared email alerts”. For a very long time, we had on the defaults to only email on Shared and so many people just don’t get the public emails. So it’s a tough one.
This is a big step for us and we are continually going to be optimizing and will be working towards higher payouts then any other video blogging system on the web.
If you haven’t watched these guys over at BestDamnTechShow you really should because they mix coolness with computer hotness. When we launch our next version tomorrow, things are going to get real interesting with these guys, but that’s as much as I will hint at, for now!
This video doesn’t make it completely apparent about how we are getting involved but it’s real simple:
1. Check out Hayden Films and watch a few of the short films (it’s like being at Canne or Sundance at the comfort of your own home). Make sure and vote because YOU choose the winner.
2. Record a video post of your review of your favorite video (post it here) and get a chance to have an expense paid trip to NYC to hang out at the film festival announcement party.
I have already caught a few of the videos, and can’t wait to do a video review.
Robert Hall has just informed me that Adobe has announced Flash 9 will now support H.264. What does this mean for Viddler and others?
H.264 will be undoubtedly be the format for web delivery This has been called the tipping point for H.264. There is no questions about this. With a standard as strong as h.264 being used in iPods, iTunes, AppleTV there will be no question about what format is standard for the web.
Higher Quality With an open standard comes more support from people using video. Combine that with the fact that hardware accelerations now will be enabled on runtime that will significantly enhance the quality of video delivered in a way that On2 VP6 could never truly accomplish.
Double site storage You *would* think that standardizing on a video format would shrink your storage. Not yet. There are still plenty of Flash 8 people and it took them 12 months to get to 90% ubiquity. Prepare for at least a year of multiple formats.
If you are delivering in Flash Video and not in MP4 (iPod format) you will know most definately want to start looking at a long-term migration path to this. We certainly are looking at this as a wakeup call to start transcoding in multiple formats.
Conclusion: Microsoft & Apple should be VERY worried
The upcoming Adobe Media Player (built on the new Adobe AIR) will be cross-platform, customizable, and with H.264 support. It will be ready to take on on iTunes and Windows Media Player and have a shot at being the desktop video application for Windows and Apple. We will have the ability to create our own desktop applications like it was Facebook Application Launch all over again.
Recently, we at Viddler made a decision to start reporting our statistics to Quantcast. Not only does Quantcast monitor rank but it is soon to help with how much Video we are deliverying.
We knew that dependency on Alexa was not great, but after on-point Michael Arrington recently published that Alexa is reporting that Youtube is bigger then Google, it solidified our position for working with Quantcast.
My belief is that websites should be held responsible for reporting the amount of traffic, not people that install the Alexa toolbar.
